I’m a Creature of Habit

I got to thinking recently about how as we age, the passing of time seems to get more and more compressed. I’ve heard about a theory of why this seems to happen: the older you get, the more likely your day to day experiences start to look similar. So one day starts to look like every other day. When you’re younger, however, lots of things are new, every day, so the experience of time seems more prolonged.

I wondered, what kind of variety can I inject into my days? Can I experience time a bit more slowly if I do? I don’t have many opportunities to do vastly different things from day to day since I’m a cube dweller like most everyone. But maybe I can mix certain aspects of my routine up?

And then it occurred to me: Lunch!

I’m usually really bad when it comes to lunch, so I thought this would be an ideal place to start. I’ve been known to have the exact same lunch every day for weeks on end, only to replace it with another lunch and repeat that forever. And given the number of lunch options available in midtown Manhattan (and even more across the city and boroughs) it seemed like a fun thing to try.

For now I’m going to try at the very least for workdays (Monday through Friday) and see what else I can vary while I’m at it.

So here’s to 2012, and to better lunches.
